High Average Power Cryogenic DPSSLs

Dr. David C. Brown is the Founder and CTO of Advanced Photonic Sciences, and is a pioneer in cryogenic high-power solid-state lasers and in the understanding of thermal effects in cryogenic and fiber lasers. He has published widely on high average power CW, picosecond, and frequency-doubled picosecond cryogenic Yb:YAG laser systems, and on the room-temperature and cryogenic spectroscopy of Yb:YAG, Ho:YAG, Yb:LuAG, and Yb:Lu2O3.
He is the discoverer of low threshold surface parasitic oscillations in large aperture disk and active-mirror amplifiers, and demonstrated the first excimer laser-pumped solid state laser, the first green laser-pumped Alexandrite laser, some of the first high-power phase-conjugated high-power solid-state and excimer lasers, and has published detailed kinetics models for Nd:YAG, Yb:YAG, and Nd:YVO4. He has held senior research positions at The Laboratory For Laser Energetics at The University of Rochester, Northrop-Grumman, and the GE Corporate Research and Development Center.
Dr. Brown is a Fellow of The Optical Society of America, and serves as a reviewer for over 16 laser and optics journals worldwide.

Yuji Sano

Overview of strategic laser projects in Japan

Dr. Yuji Sano is a PM (program manager) of Division of Research Innovation and Collaboration, Institute for Molecular Science (IMS). He is managing collaborative activities with industries in the division and TILA (tiny integrated laser) consortium. At present, he is additional appointed to guest professor of Osaka university, technical advisor of Toshiba ESS Corp. and R&D director of a venture company, LAcubed. He is an advisory board member of some national laser projects. Until March 2019, he was a PM of ImPACT program under the cabinet office of the Japanese government, where he was directing R&Ds of laser plasma acceleration of electrons and high-power solid-state pulsed lasers. Before the assignment to the PM in 2014, he had served Toshiba and developed laser applications especially laser peening since 1994. He concurrently served as a program officer (PO) of Photon Frontier Network supported by the government from 2008 to 2014.
